It is the principle design principle of the Windows 7 operating system. It is also used by Microsoft to detect activation in some situations, for example in software that does not require a product key to activate. Windows 7's activation relies on a combination of "digital certificates and licence files" stored on local hard disks and attached storage devices; if the computer has no such file present, it may be required to contact Microsoft. The process was outlined by Andreas Dittmer under "How do I download and install Windows 7?" in 2007: "After having successfully activated your copy of Windows, you can install it again on the same PC or you can reactivate your copy as many times as you like. ... For example, if you have a desktop PC and a laptop, you can install Windows 7 on both computers and reactivate it on both." He added that "You can also move the license to a new PC if your old one breaks down", but that "If you move your Windows 7 license to a new PC or if you have newly built a PC from the ground up, then you won't be able to activate it over the Internet. In this case, Microsoft will need to see your installation ID in order for them to verify whether your copy of Windows is genuine or not." In September 2009, leaked material from the SEC suggested that Microsoft would pursue legal action against users who installed pirated versions of its operating systems. When asked whether Microsoft would pursue legal action against those who install pirated versions of Windows, an MITRE spokesman stated "We are not able to comment on what legal action Microsoft or any other company might take against individuals under the current circumstances". Windows 7 Home Premium will activate itself automatically after installation if there is a valid product key on the computer. By default, Windows 7 Home Premium activation is disabled. This feature (known as "minimal activation") exists since Windows Vista but had some exceptions; it was only fully operational in January 2010 with the release of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 Starter Edition. In February 2011 the USLiSuite was released. It injects a slui.exe into the Windows Explorer shell replacing the default slui.exe included with Windows 7. The key of the software is an MSDN Subscription Key, so it can be used for free by anyone having a MSDN subscription, and it allows a clean installation of Windows 7 without entering a product key after reboot, as well as performing other functions. The product key entered only once after reboot remains non-persistent and does not have to be entered again. On April 2, 2011 Microsoft announced that Windows 7 has passed 200 million licenses sold worldwide since its launch in October 2009, even before its successor's release. The release of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 Starter Edition will give the product a major boost as it allows the installation of Windows 7 with no product key. In May 2011, Microsoft announced that as a result of the early upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, more than 100 million licenses have been activated. In order to prevent pirates from using this activation method, Microsoft will be blocking all activations on June 28, 2011 at midnight UTC. As of August 2012, about 500 million copies of Windows 7 have been sold worldwide. Only 500 million PCs running Windows XP or Vista had ever successfully installed Windows 7 or later versions after its release. cfa1e77820
