The movie starts by introducing George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, who play Matt Kowalski and Dr. Ryan Stone respectively. They’re in a space shuttle, watching the Hubble Space Telescope be destroyed by debris from an old satellite. The shuttle is then hit with some of the debris, scattering them out into space. Bullock is unable to get back inside the shuttle because she has lost her space suit's glove - which was caused when it had torn off while they were picking up some satellites - while Clooney manages to get himself back inside the shuttle after getting his hand stuck in some wires outside of it while trying to save her. He is then sucked out of the shuttle through an airlock, but gets back in when he passes through it. He then meets the ground crew, who are trying to return power back to the damaged Hubble Space Telescope. He also meets two other astronauts - Jennifer Lawrence and Ed Harris, who are both trying to get into the Hubble Space Telescope with him for a second time in hopes that they can possibly use its power to stop the Debris from hitting Earth. Clooney is initially against going back inside it after his previous attempt had been unsuccessful, but eventually agrees after seeing how close they were to figuring out a solution. He is then told that another shuttle will be taking them up to the telescope. Once they have finished securing themselves in the Hubble Space Telescope, they find a good solution to prevent the Debris from hitting Earth - a satellite in orbit can be used to shoot a one-ton slingshot into space with its Van Allen Belt, thus redirecting the Debris’ path away from Earth. They would have no idea that Clooney had been there in previous trips when he was not supposed to be. He also sees a movie on Hubble's computer called "An Inconvenient Truth," which he had previously seen when he was going through NASA training. He turns it on when he sees it which upsets Bullock, who was angry with Clooney for even being in there in the first place. He is then told by Bullock that she is pregnant with his child. He tells her that "the world is going to change" when they get back to Earth, and that they're going to have a baby. After some time, they manage to get back into the shuttle with some help from a robot named TARS (played by Bill Irwin in a CGI suit). It was a big success in its previous trips into space, and they used it for their advantage in getting back inside the shuttle after their previous trips had failed miserably. Just as they are getting ready to return to Earth, Bullock gets an emergency message from an astronaut who they only know as "Matty" (Clooney's character's nickname). He asks them to come back right now. As soon as she says that they're coming, Lawrence turns the Hubble Space Telescope towards the sun, which causes Clooney to lose his balance. He then runs into space with Bullock after TARS had tried its best to stop him by using explosives. He then tries to use another one of his inventions for a second time, hoping that it would work once more.
